Seven Steps to Success
Regarding Scripture: Proverbs 3.1-12
Self-help books are national bestsellers and many provide insights for accomplishment and fulfillment. However, of the many helpful books I have read, the books fail and fall short of true self-help. “Why?” you may ask, because they fail to recognize, maybe worse – refuse, to accept that an individual should be in subjection to anyone, let alone a Higher Power.
Proverbs 3.5-10 provides an outline for success, within the framework of the first 12 verses of Proverbs 3. This proverb of Solomon concisely states seven principles (seven steps to success – if you will) that individuals will follow in order to have rewarding and successful lives. However, each “step” requires something we don’t want – and that is submission (a complete emptying of individual self-will).
Solomon’s seven steps to success enumerated:
1. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart – (Proverbs 3.5a)
Have confidence & hope in God, with all of your feelings & intellect
2. Lean not on your understanding – (Proverbs 3.5b)
Do not rely on your own wisdom
3. In all thy ways acknowledge Him – (Proverbs 3.6a)
In all your journeys recognize and be conscious of God
4. Be not wise in your own eyes – (Proverbs 3.7a)
Do not think that your intelligence, common sense, skills, or cunning is best
5. Fear the Lord – (Proverbs 3.7b)
Meaning revere God. Have regard for God with fear, mingled with respect and affection
6. Depart from evil – (Proverbs 3.7c)
Turn away and withdraw from things that are naturally and/or morally wicked or wrong
7. Honor the Lord – (Pro 3.9)
This last “step” has two parts. An individual will honor God with:
- · Substance – Meaning riches & wealth
- · First fruits of all increase – Meaning giving to Him the first portion of everything gained – not leftovers
The Success
If an individual willingly yields to these seven steps, they will enjoy the following success, God will:
- · Direct your travels (3.6)
- · Nourish & sustain you (3.8)
- · Provide abundantly (3.10)
The dramatics of this self-help proverb is not gaining independence – but dependence. A life that is completely dependent on God. With such we can obtain peace of mind and security that each of us wants.
